The historic building's architecture is fine and full of character.
The carpets in the hallways were heavily stained, contributing to an overall feeling of neglect.

Clean, good value hotel, the location was comfy just off many restaurants, bars & shopping, the centre, historic attractions. The staff was helpful and efficient. The room was large and updated and with large windows. We had a really really nice time.

Great spot for a group trip! We had a blast exploring the Old Fisherman's Wharf and kayaking with Adventures by the Sea. The hotel really cares about accessibility and cleanliness, and the breakfast was a nice start to each day. Perfect location for hitting up local attractions.
Had issues with noise from adjacent rooms, which disrupted our sleep.

Free wifi
This is a really tired hotel, the la k of a working elevator is the first clue to this and they need to spend the money they are saving on fixing that to renovate the rooms. Our room was very small, with two smaller comfortable beds with no headboard! The bathroom was so small your legs were wedged between the sink and toilet! If you are a light sleeper then avoid the rooms to the front as it is so noisy at night from the street that it took me hours to get to sleep. The complimentary ear plugs didn't help, and have you ever stayed at a hotel that had complimentary ear plugs!!! Breakfast was very poor. This wasn't a budget priced hotel so I'd recommend giving you money to be of the other hotels in Monterey.

Although the building is old, it is very well maintained. The room is beautiful and charmingly decorated in accordance with the style of the building. The bathroom is huge. The location on Monterrey's main street full of restaurants and steps away from a Walgreens makes it very convenient. The staff that received us was very friendly. The breakfast, although not very varied, was well served in a large dining room.
The access to our room: we traveled with our 2 small children and a lot of luggage and there were 12 steps to get to the elevator and then, since it is a hotel that has an old part and a newer part and our room was in the old part, we had to go out to a small corridor going up more steps. Uncomfortable, although I rescue the help of the bellboy. The room faced the street and was a bit noisy. The heating was also quite noisy. The old TV didn't work well.

I loved this old hotel it was beautifully decorated with period antiques, the room was a little on the small side but gorgeous. The huge arched window with the fan shaped detail and the custom plantation shutters where very unique. You could even get a glimpse of the bay and the shoppers on the street. There were many restaurants nearby and a lot of shopping. There was an art and craft fair in the plaza nearby. It was a beautiful mile and a half walk to Cannery Row, we definitely got our cardio workout for the day. Three miles roundtrip and well worth the effort, great place to get away and just chill...
There is no elevator, but they do have a young, strong bellman/Valet, more than glad to carry your bags to the third floor. :)

I liked the location of the Monterey Hotel. It is central and surrounded by restaurants and all the sites and happening of Monterey. The staff was helpful especially the very good-looking and warm people at the front desk. Good staffing there. I like the leisurely and relaxed manner of the hotel and the old look of everything.
My bed was a little large for the room and it made noise whenever I moved, but we grew to love that, but were afraid the neighbors would complain. There was no iron in the room which would have been nice. Although, I can't see where I would have room for an ironing board.

The Monterey offers spacious rooms, and I particularly enjoyed the cozy ambiance upgraded with the working fireplace in the queen double room. The continental breakfast was great with a variety of fresh fruits, croissants, bagels, and excellent coffee. The hotel's location was ideal, being conveniently situated near the conference center.
Noise from adjacent rooms disrupted my stay.

great for weekend strolls near eateries and attractions
I loved being just a few steps away from Selfieville and the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail. The choice of restaurants nearby, like Rosine's and Plumes Coffee House, really added to the convenience of dining choices . As a solo traveler, the comfortable room was a nice bonus after a long day of walking and discovering the city, but I did notice that the carpets in the hallways could use a little attention.
